Chapter Fourteen

“M ikhail, what is going on? Where is Timofei?” Gwen asked, as she walked over to Mikhail, who stood in the main hall at council, looking worried.

He didn't have a chance to respond before the door behind them opened, and Gwen heard Timofei inside. “Ladies, thank you. I will return momentarily.”

She watched as he exited, the ever present smile on his face.

He looked at her and Mikhail and took the cage he asked her to bring from her hands. “My dear. You are not rested. Let us walk to Percy while we have a brief chat.”

She took his free hand and had to remind herself not to pull away as he kissed her forehead. This was the new forever. “I was resting when you called. I didn't think we were doing more tonight. Is there something wrong? Where is Dmitry?”

“If I were a temperamental creature, that Dmitry was the first name off your lips would be most perturbing.”

“You, better than most, understand my hate for him. I can't be seen with you. He has eyes all over council. Loyal eyes that would be happy to throw me at his feet. You know what that would mean for me.”

“You will come to trust I always have things well in hand, beloved. Your Lewis is to be stripped tonight. I did not anticipate it would take so long to court a witch, when the offer I made was so generous to begin with.”

“Tonight? So long? I wasn't expecting tonight. Thank you.”

“I am not a fan of dallying on piffling matters. I have been discussing what this means with Isabelle, Greta, and Mauro, who by the way is not a fan of yours. Seems you irritate him. At any rate, what is to be done with Lewis is for you to decide.” He stopped talking when they arrived at the door to Percy.

“Piffling? I am a trivial matter?”

He smiled and kissed her nose. “You are my most consequential matter. Lewis is piffling. Go inside, heal your tired body and then we can talk about the triviality of Lewis.”

When she stepped back out after seeing Percy, Timofei took her hand again and they started back toward the meeting room.

“What are my options with Lewis?”

“Options? It is my gift to you. I don't care what you do, do precisely as you want to do. Limits are no way to start a relationship.”

“Can I talk with Lewis first? I'm not even sure he was willingly a part of things, or if that woman enslaved him.”

“You would forgive his part?” He turned his head, looking like he was at a loss.

“If he had no choice, I would.”

“Fascinating. That is entirely up to you, my precious witch.” He looked forward again.

“How am I, how are we doing this?” She noticed again in between their conversation only her footsteps were heard.

“Isabelle will strip him. You can chat with him, fight with him, whatever. I can stay if you feel unsafe. Mauro can stay. You tell me, dear.”

“Can I talk to him alone?”

“If you like.
